St. Paul’s & St. George’s Church
Edinburgh, Scotland, 2008
The church of St. Paul’s and St. Georges has been completely refurbished by Lee Boyd Architects. This involved the renovation of the existing interior and exterior fabric, construction of a new steel-structure gallery level, office/community spaces and a new entrance pavilion. KSLD was involved from the early stages of the design process since it was desired that lighting be an integral and important aspect of the space.
For the main interior space all lighting was detailed into the new structures, with the ambient lighting provided by 13 custom-designed chandeliers suspended from the timber ceiling with raise/lowering mechanisms. All lighting circuits are controlled by a dynamic lighting control system that allows the congregation to change the lighting levels in the interior spaces as desired. The entrance pavilion lighting was completed with perimeter LED lighting recessed into the floor and ceiling.
