Scottish Poetry Library
Edinburgh, Scotland, 2000
The Scottish Poetry Library is a newly constructed building in Edinburgh’s Old Town housing works of traditional and contemporary Scottish poetry as well as other poetry from around the world. The exterior lighting for the project is entirely responsive to the lyricism expressed in the architecture. The warm colour of the exterior timber is enhanced through the use of warm colour CDM lamps which, while highlighting the timber screens also bathe the public area in gentle light. The interior lighting contributes to the sense of connection between the public realm and the activity of the library and is restrained so as to avoid presenting an over bright façade in the long dark winter evenings. The scheme is designed entirely with energy efficient light sources and is carefully considered to provide the appropriate lighting with the minimum energy use, minimising operating costs as well as environmental impact. The nighttime lighting points downwards to minimise sky pollution and the direct and reflected light is contained within the grounds of the property. This prevents light pollution and demarcates the boundary of the project.
