Loch Lomond Shores VA Building
Scotland, 2000
This building houses a large format 350 seat iWerks film theatre with glazed viewing areas from which one can see Loch Lomond and the Western Highlands beyond. The building concept externally echoes a castle or keep while the interior resembles the natural world with a tree form support structure and seasonal colours around the external walls. It is one of three new buildings comprising the Lomond Shores Development by West Dumbartonshire Enterprise.
Lighting this building posed several challenges as much of it is glazed to increase views of the impressive landscape beyond and also many surfaces are of exposed concrete. The lighting also had to ensure that the views were preserved during hours of darkness. The film theatre and public hall have high ceilings, inaccessible without a tower scaffold, so the lighting solutions had to be carefully considered to avoid glare and ease maintenance.
