Centre for Health Science
Inverness, Scotland, 2007
The Centre for Health Science was specifically developed to house the training functions for Raigmore Hospital. The concept design was by Bennetts Associates Architects with Keppie Design taking the project forward through construction. The building has clean modern lines and the lighting design is carefully integrated to reinforce the principal design elements while allowing for future changes of use for each separate floor.
As a building for learning, the lighting elements are inserted in atypical ways. For example, wall washing to the copper core is predominantly from below rather than above. The linear light element in the floor, lighting the underside of the balcony, accents this strong architectural feature. These challenge the normal perception of the space and invoke an enquiring attitude in the building users, perfectly setting them up for their learning experience.
